Compare and contrast.

These are essays from a famous think tank.

These are link farmers who think publicly in a new kind of tank.

The power of the public media is growing, and it is important, but does it really have any real voice in the world, or will the majority of it be covered in the global moan that it has become as a whole.

No more referrer hunting.

It's hard not to check the stats every 10 minutes to see if anybody linked to me. To help my weak will not to do this, I created an RSS file that shows all referrers of the current day. It even tries to show the title of the referring page and an excerpt. The excerpt is simply the whole line that contains “w3future.com”, with the html tags stripped. It works surprisingly well for such a simple hack.

The information that is gathered for the referrer RSS is stored in my RDF database. You can now query this information. An example: RDF data for http://w3future.com/weblog/.

this could be cool….

Direct action. It seems that there is some disconnection between the foreign policies of the American administration and the beliefs of a significant part of the population. In many countries, direct action is seen as a normal response. Will that happen here? Or here? [MetaFilter]

to take direct action against the government's policies is quite impossible, you can do it against the government, but let us realize here that someone elected the majority of these people in most cases…. As such, maybe people should investigate what their representative is doing and approving at the same time.

In Job Search, Warm and Fuzzy Beats Online and All-Business. Young people, it seems, tend to place great faith in their Internet skills and lack familiarity with the personal approach that many employers are seeking. By Melinda Ligos. [New York Times: Technology]

Fool me once, shame on you, etc.

Today's NY Times features an interesting piece by David Sanger about the contortions the Bush administration is going through in trying to decide what evidence about Iraqi arms violations it can declassify for Secretary of State Powell to present to the U.N.. I can understand not wanting to reveal stuff from informants for fear of blowing their cover; but apparently they're reluctant even to reveal satellite photos, because somehow they might reveal details about the satellites' capabilities to our rivals.

to be anything less than a fool, is to not believe in government

Museum of Compilers. Borland offers its antique compilers and development environments — Turbo Pascal and Turbo C in particular — for free at their museum site. I was one of the first customers for Turbo Pascal when it was a $29.00 wonder and hadn't yet been acquired by Borland, so I'm looking forward to the musty rush of nostalgia…. [Joho the Blog]

this type of thing should be encouraged.

I'd like this instead of the woeful search technology on the Irish Times archive — maybe the government might want to have a goo (gle) as well: “It's difficult to imagine getting more from a $23,000 investment in search technology than the city of San Diego has gotten from its deployment of a Google Inc. search appliance.” [[ t e c h n o \ c u l t u r e ]]

this is a solution that amazes me, but is ultimately, i think the only way to go.
