identifying a political problem

The Rise of Pseudo Fascism
. Part 1: The Morphing of the Conservative Movement

Part 2: The Architecture of Fascism

Part 3: The Pseudo-Fascist Campaign

Part 4: The Apocalyptic One-Party State

“We don't want to get rid of all liberals. I want to keep a couple, for example, [Orcinus]

A very interesting series. It demonstrates that many in the Republican party care little about America or Americans. They want a one party state where their political power can never be shaken, either by another political party or by the people. Power simply for its own purpose. Does not sound like a country where being different, creative or innovative will be a plus. too much possibility of upsetting the one party system. [A Man with a Ph.D. - Richard Gayle's Weblog]

Bush admits combat missions in Iraq are geared towards influencing US election

At some point, someone, somewhere has to raise a stink about this.
Bush has ordered our troops
in Iraq to delay any major assaults on rebel-held cities in Iraq, apparently even if they're militarily necessary, until after the US elections in November.

My favorite quote is the following:

“When this election's over, you'll see us move very vigorously,” said one senior administration official involved in strategic planning, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Once you're past the election, it changes the political ramifications” of a large-scale offensive, the official said.

I.e., we're going to wait until after the elections because then no one will care what we do.

If you're a service member in Iraq, or know a service member in Iraq, share this article with other of our troops. They need to know that their lives are being used as political fodder by this president.

I saw this the other day. So, political concerns will drive out military strategy. Can't do anything before Nov. 2. What message does this send to our troops and to our enemies? [A Man with a Ph.D. - Richard Gayle's Weblog]

politics is war by any other means. this is the wrong way to fight a war. everyone knows that. more or less what he is doing is sacrificing a few lives, because the insurgents will have more time to prepare, etc. President Bush as it seems is thus not a military leader at all.

Bush on Hard Work. This remix of George Bush on “hard work” is wonderful. (I should have been doing this before, so forgive the unkindness before but: Thanks, John Driscoll!) [Lessig Blog] [A blog doesn't need a clever name]

more vacations than anyone not on permanent vacation, more time off than any president in my life… he's not a president, so much as he's a vacationer, and he doesn't know hard work.

Wired Magazine Internships.

Wired Magazine asked me to mention that they're hiring interns for positions that will run from January to June. They're looking specifically for people into gadgetry and gear and all that stuff, who are also interested in pursuing journalism as a career. It sounds like a great opportunity to learn what it's like to be a technoblogger: “no professional journalism experience” and “pitching” required.

Climate fear as carbon levels soar. An unexplained and unprecedented rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere two years running has raised fears that the world may be on the brink of runaway global warming. Scientists are baffled why the quantity of the main greenhouse gas has leapt in a twoÉyear period and are concerned that the Earth's natural systems are no longer able to absorb as much as in the past.
