Factor of Ten – A Future Worth Having – ANU

Factor of Ten – A Future Worth Having – ANU:
Factor of Ten — A Future Worth Having: science
and art of the environment meet at the Australian National University.
Through the presentation of aesthetically powerful forms of expression,
Factor of Ten engages people both emotionally and intellectually with ideas about the environment, and in particular the need to reduce energy and material consumption by a factor of ten if Australia is to achieve a sustainable future.

the buddha machine: lo-fi zen minimalist heaven

the buddha machine: lo-fi zen minimalist heaven:
In the mail yesterday, I got a buddha machine. I love it, and I made a minimalist lo-fi film to celebrate. Incidentally, it was not only shot but also edited in about 10 minutes using the VideoDJ application (which is a perfectly functional video editing tool) in my Sony Ericsson K800i. Very cool.

The Decline and Fall of the British University

The Decline and Fall of the British University:
Poor communication, expensive
reading materials and illiteracy were the foundation blocks for
the universities. If today we have excellent
communications, free online information and general
literacy, we also have an environment in which the universities
are struggling to maintain their position. That, of course,
is not an accident.

Seymour Martin Lipset, Sociologist, Dies at 84 – New York Times

Seymour Martin Lipset, Sociologist, Dies at 84 – New York Times:
Seymour Martin Lipset, who ignored family pressure to be a dentist and instead became a pre-eminent sociologist, political scientist and incisive theorist on American uniqueness, died on Dec. 31 in Arlington, Va. He was 84.

——-

I don’t think that many people get through political science degrees without reading some Lipset… He made some interesting arguments.

i’m a dork, yes you knew

The Dork
You scored 36 anxiety, 57 awkwardness, and 32 neuroticism!
You aren’t particularly anxious, and you don’t count things–but you do notice sometimes that you don’t exactly fit in. Polite people would call you an eccentric, but you truly are The Dork! And proud. Just because you feel a little awkward at parties doesn’t mean you’re not happy with yourself and fairly relaxed.

Your low anxiety score implies that you are able to relax, can enjoy the here and now, and have a healthy amount of self-confidence.

Your high awkwardness score implies that you are socially inept, probably stick out from the crowd, and perhaps feel uncomfortable in large groups of people, such as at parties.

Your low neuroticism score implies that you don’t exhibit subtle neurotic behaviors–your nails are probably an acceptable length, your pencils aren’t covered with bite marks, and your bookcase isn’t arranged alphabetically by genre. Congrats!
