Genius for hire

Genius for hire:
So you’ve been looking and looking for a job and not getting hired. You’ve started to wonder if it’s the way you look or–horrors!–smell.

Take heart.

Clearly the problem is that you are just too darned intelligent for your own good.

World’s cleverest woman can’t find a job
….Bulgarian Daniela Simidchieva, a mother of three, has five Masters Degrees and an IQ of almost 200. She’s listed by the country’s Mensa office as the world’s cleverest but despite sending off hundreds of applications she still hasn’t found a job. Her IQ is the same as that of chemist Marie Curie who was the first person to win the Noble Prize twice but cannot even get a cleaning job….

———-

i spectulate that there might be other issues involved than intelligence in this case…..

Italian university rectors sign Berlin Declaration

Italian university rectors sign Berlin Declaration:

The rectors of 32 Italian universities signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge on Friday. (The signatures will soon appear on the Berlin signature page but are not up yet.) The rectors had gathered for the conference, Gli atenei italiani per l’Open Access: verso l’accesso aperto alla letteratura di ricerca [Italian Universities for Open Access: Towards Open Access to Scholarly Literature] (Messina, November 4-5, 2004). I will have more details on Monday when the conference organizers release a public statement. (PS: Kudos to the Italian universities for committing themselves to OA and to their librarians for the extensive background work in educating their communities about it.)

Academia resources

Academia resources:

Paul W. Schleck has collected a fine list of resources about academia generally and grad school in particular, including quite a few things I hadn’t seen before. Worth checking out.

——
dorothea points to some interesting notes on academia… i like the argument on how and why universities and others create the idea of the labor shortage in science and engineering.

Self?

Yes.

Self?

Yes.

Self?

Yes.

Then we are all in attendance.

Today’s agenda, to determine the future of Miz Elouise Oyzon. The goal is to have specific action items by the end of the meeting. Each you of you will participate.

One of the weezes is looking out the window at the moving clouds, thinking about baking bread and drinking chocolate.

Another is fondly remembering touch.

Yet another is hoping the vanilla girl will come back, regretting how she had dismissed her so summarily.

I close the book.
There will be no decisions today.

Technology in the Academy…

Technology in the Academy…:
[This is from Liz Lawley] Many-to-Many: fear and loathing in the academy Last month, I moderated a workshop on “social software in the academy” at USC’s Annenberg Center for Communication. The attendees were primarily Annenberg faculty and graduate students, along…

but… i think we really have to think about the broader scope of this. sure there are universities that are tightly controlled and they may seek to stop certain technological uses, and they may in fact be obligated to stop some things in some interpretations, but overall, i don’t think one finds this occurring often, or outside of the normal traditions of a university. because of that, i think j’s response on this on liz’s blog is insightful.
