A PC that you can install in your WALL! »
Our Picks – News, articles and reviews
:
It’s called Jack PC, and it can fit into a network wall port. Just plug your keyboard, mouse and monitor into the wall. The Jack PC runs Windows CE and it’s equipped with an equivalent of a 800MHz to 1.2GHz x86 desktop processor.
The Jack PC comes in 3 models, ranging from £209 to £349, and it’s produced by a company in Israel, called Chip PC Technologies. So, if you’re fed up with your big old PC, you can always get a replacement the size of a small box, or one that can fit into your wall. Below are several pictures of the latter. (Note: The pictures are very large. If you enlarge them, please have patience while they load).

Spotted in 2600: Spoofing Singapore’s National Library

Spotted in 2600: Spoofing Singapore’s National Library:
In the recent issue of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly (autumn 2006), there’s a writeup by Ghostie about spoofing the Singapore Library’s RFID and barcode checkout scanners. Note that this zine probably isn’t available in Singapore, so I thought it would be educational from a security perspective.

On maps and indigenous knowledge structures

Of maps and fishermen:
“There is for example a mountain on one on the Haram isles, which is called Skulen, and when one is on a certain area of the ocean this mountain hides another mountain, farther in on the Mainland, which is called Hildre-hesten (the Hildre-horse); if one travels along the land towards the North, then the Horse little by little will come into sight beyond Skulen, and then one says: The Horse fine (when the head of the Horse just has become visible), the Horse coarse, the first part of the Horse, the second part of the Horse, the saddle of the Horse is clear of Skulen etc, and by each of these sightings one knows where one is on the route between South and North; if at the same time one has a méd on the other side one will as well know where one is in the direction from the land or between East and West; thus the experienced man will know, that to avoid this or that reef, he cannot sail any further in this direction, but must veer off to another. Thus, a pilot is able to steer his boat between breakers and dangers, scarcely looking at the dangerous items close by, but more certainly and more often fixes his eyes on the land and the distant mountain heights far way.

Sometimes geography means much more than it seems to mean. The way the world works and its interpretation structures the way we get around in it. We learn to navigate through our world, and navigation is a certain form of thinking…. we need to be aware that as we build structures and systems of interpretation that these do not become systems that overwrite the way people know and navigate already.

one thing not to like about nyc Pocket Change

Pocket Change
Pocket Change is honoring
the age old union of wealthy men and hot girls. Society has taught us to not publicly
acknowledge the obvious – no longer dear friends. Women want money in a man, men
want beauty in a woman – this is a factual force of nature. Women don’t ask “So,
what does he do for a living?” because they’re interested in his personality and
guys don’t ask “is she hot?” because they’re concerned with character. Guys know
that money buys them the car, the house and the trophy wife. This genetic cleansing
is how the wealthy stays beautiful.

it is the shallowness and centrality of ‘wealth’.

Factor of Ten – A Future Worth Having – ANU

Factor of Ten – A Future Worth Having – ANU:
Factor of Ten — A Future Worth Having: science
and art of the environment meet at the Australian National University.
Through the presentation of aesthetically powerful forms of expression,
Factor of Ten engages people both emotionally and intellectually with ideas about the environment, and in particular the need to reduce energy and material consumption by a factor of ten if Australia is to achieve a sustainable future.

This is pretty interesting… Nice art and science inter-relatioship

the buddha machine: lo-fi zen minimalist heaven

the buddha machine: lo-fi zen minimalist heaven:
In the mail yesterday, I got a buddha machine. I love it, and I made a minimalist lo-fi film to celebrate. Incidentally, it was not only shot but also edited in about 10 minutes using the VideoDJ application (which is a perfectly functional video editing tool) in my Sony Ericsson K800i. Very cool.
