t r u t h o u t – Ashcroft Seeking Control of Voting Rights
“This is the first time in history the Justice Department has gone to court to side against voters who are trying to enforce their right to vote. I think this law will mean very little if the rights of American voters have to depend on this Justice Department,” said Hebert, who worked in the voting-rights section from 1973 to 1994.
”It is pretty rare for the Department of Justice to take a position that there is no private right of action to enforce a federal statute guaranteeing voting rights,” he added.

ummm, no, this needs to be done by the people and for the people too.

Internet Vets for Truth launch election-week download blowout
Internet Vets for Truth launch election-week download blowout:Xeni Jardin:
An anonymous tipster points us to the launch of an election-related download project organized by a group called “Internet Veterans for Truth.” If you’re familiar with P2P-politics, you get the basic idea — though the projects are not related, and don’t follow the same content-gathering process.
The site features excerpts (and some full-length downloads) from features including Going Upriver, Farenheit 9/11, Uncovered, a bunch of Jon Stewart and Daily Show clips, and Eminem’s Mosh video.
Snip from the internetvetsfortruth.org site:
Subject: The Rumors On the Internets Are True!
The INTERNETS VETERANS FOR TRUTH have launched a new pre-election campaign, “Never Forget,” at internetvetsfortruth.org in an effort to educate the voting public prior to the November 2nd election.
The website features documentary content highlighting the records of both
George W. Bush and John Kerry. The Internets Veterans for truth invite you to view this documentary evidence
as well as to enjoy the social and political commentary of Jon Stewart,
Eminem, and others. We know the rumors on the Internets are true. We invite you to visit and decide for yourself. And please, pass this on to our fellow Americans. Let’s blogroll.
Link. Everything’s free, natch.

The Economist: John Kerry for President
The Economist: John Kerry for President:
As rumored, the Economist endorses Kerry, albeit with some reluctance. Indeed, the endorsement is more an indictment of Bush. It sums up:
“After three necessarily tumultuous and transformative years, this is a time for consolidation, for discipline and for repairing America’s moral and practical authority. Furthermore, as Mr Bush has often said, there is a need in life for accountability. He has refused to impose it himself, and so voters should, in our view, impose it on him, given a viable alternative. John Kerry, for all the doubts about him, would be in a better position to carry on with America’s great tasks.”——–
against bush is good enough.

A year ago, i broke my hatred for protesting and took to the streets to publicly state my disagreement with my government. My support for their decisions has not grown. I still don't understand what we're doing in Iraq and i'm tired of the propaganda. But, unlike last year, i didn't go to the streets. I find protests a bit frustrating because i don't feel as though i'm actually helping any cause and the supposed community goodness part of it tends to turn me against my fellow dissenters.
That said, it makes me sick to my stomach to hear of police violence against protestors. Worse, i'm absolutely horrified to read about how the government operates to outlaw dissent in this country [a *scary* must read article - use the day pass - it's worth it].
To cheer me up, a friend sent along a list of the marriage status of some of the biggest defenders of the sanctity of marriage (from The Daily Show):
Ronald Reagan — divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy Reagan who bore him a daughter 7 months after the marriage.
Bob Dole — divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.
Newt Gingrich — divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.
Dick Armey, House Majority Leader — divorced.
Senator Phil Gramm of Texas — divorced.
Governor John Engler of Michigan — divorced.
Governor Pete Wilson of California — divorced.
George Will — divorced.
Senator Lauch Faircloth — divorced.
Rush Limbaugh — and his current wife, Marta, have six marriages and four divorces between them.
Senator Bob Barr of Georgia — not yet 50 years old, has been married three times. He had the audacity to author and push the “Defense of Marriage Act.” The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is “Bob Barr — WHICH marriage are you defending?!?)
Senator Alf onse D'Amato of New York — divorced.
Senator John Warner of Virginia — once married to Liz Taylor.
Governor George Allen of Virginia — divorced.
Representative Helen Chenoweth of Idaho — divorced.
Senator John McCain of Arizona — divorced.
Representative John Kasich of Ohio — divorced.
Representative Susan Molinari of New York (Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker) — divorced.
The bottom line — “Don't let gays destroy marriage — that's the job of the Republicans!”
“If you really want to protect the institution of marraige, how about a constitutional amendment against adultery?”Ê – Jon Stewart

this is funny, but also very very true of american conservatives, they want others governed in ways they have not allowed themself to be governed by.
