Second Life Makes Dream Of Owning Fictitious Coffee Shop Come True | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source
Second Life Makes Dream Of Owning Fictitious Coffee Shop Come True | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source:
“As long as I can remember, I’ve pictured myself owning a multipolygonal 3-D representation of what a coffee shop might be in the real world,” said Jarrett, who has invested hundreds of real dollars and thousands of actual hours in Never Bean, her digital pseudo-business in Second Life’s popular Scurfield district.

Caliburn Susanto – SANCTUARY!
Caliburn Susanto – SANCTUARY!:
This function is not a boon, it is a source of derision. A mistake. Voice has always been available OUTSIDE of Second Life for use by whoever needs it for education, entertainment, or business. Adding it to the SL Client is NOT necessary and not good. Second Life will now be divided between those who will only communicate via voice chat and those who prefer the charm that is inherent in, and the civility that is at least partially enforced by, the slight inconvenience of typing everything. So those of us that don’t want the degradation of our former fantasyland will leave voice communication de-activated, and therefore be left out of whatever interesting conversations might be going on because we don’t want to have to be forced to listen to the attendant garbage.

I’d add that it ruins the educational situation too… as it requires proximity to be used, and well, when the world is the classroom where you can talk to each other in im over thousands of meters, why are you standing together.. talking, looking at each other? it is like… ‘we could go outside and look at flowers…. but i’ll just sit here and draw a flower on the board’…. dumb.

Public access group challenges Smithsonian over copyrights
Public access group challenges Smithsonian over copyrights:
Grabbing pictures of iconic Smithsonian Institution artifacts just got a whole lot easier.
Before, if you wanted to get a picture of the Wright Brothers’ plane, you could go to the Smithsonian Images Web site and pay for a print or high-resolution image after clicking through several warnings about copyrights and other restrictions — and only if you were a student, teacher or someone pledging not to use it to make money.
Now, you can just go to the free photo-sharing Web site flickr.com.

CFP: Learning and Research In Second Life Preconference Workshop
Call for Papers/Participation
Please join us in a workshop on learning and research in Second Life
(R) on October 17, 2007 in Vancouver at Internet Research 8.0 (http://
wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=About_IR8.0)
Paper Deadline August 15th.
Second Life(R) is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab
which has captured the attentions of researchers and teachers from
around the world from a variety of disciplines.
This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a
Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers
together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related
to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day
schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests
on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated
learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical
research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere?
How can we better enable research?
As a highlight, Robin Linden will give a talk to the group, and
members of Linden Lab will likely participate throughout the day.
We encourage researchers to submit papers and short biography to
slworkshop@tmttlt.com which will be selected and distributed amongst
participants before the workshop. First invitations will be offered
to those who provide full papers for consideration.
These papers have two purposes: first is to provide a common platform
for understanding our research and teaching and second submitted
papers may be considered for publication in an edited volume being
produced in relation to the workshop, or possibly in peer reviewed
publication derived from the workshop (these are currently under
discussion).
Subsequent invitation will be made based upon research/teaching
statement and biography. If you are interested in participating,
please send an email containing your information to
slworkshop@tmttlt.com.
Decisions will be made by September 1st, barring incident. There is
a limit of 35 participants at the physical meeting; the event will be
simulcast into Second Life.
We welcome professionals, faculty and graduate students to
participate.
This workshop is sponsored by Linden Lab creators of Second Life and
is organized by Jeremy Hunsinger and Aleks Krotoski. Free lunch,
coffee breaks and the room is included in participation.

Earlier today, a friend of Jesse’s joined the libsl IRC channel and notified us of some horrible news:
“Hello everybody, I come baring bad news about JesseMalthus, I’m not sure if he visited this channel frequently, but sadly Jesse passed away earlier today following a car accident yesterday. I am sorry I have had to be the person to tell you this, and I hope you can join us all in sending his family and friends our deepest sympathy”

I’ve known jesse since he appeared on Kula. He was a good guy, a programmer, a founder of the rubyists group in sl, and he did interesting work. I understood that he had just nabbed a summer programming gig with a major consulting company… based on his work with libsl. He was doing great things for one so young and our world is less for his his loss.
jesse had land in kula along with many of hist builds, experiments, and friends. We will miss him. if anyone wants to build anything there in memorium, we’ve made his space.. malthusium into a temporary sandbox, which he always loved.

Seeker has some great shots of the cross-sim jump that i’ built in kula 3 almost 15 months ago…. he has a great review. He didn’t try …. the 4 corners jump that takes you over the colloseum, but that is almost impossible now… with the Creative Commons sim under construction. The goal there is to jump from kula 4 to kula 2…. it was way cool.
