Faith = Illness. Why I’ve had it with religious tolerance.
4/30/2006 12:48:00 PM | Link
So what’s a nice Jewish boy like me writing such a seemingly sacreligious comic book for Vertigo? My last column in Arthur magazine may cast some light on this issue.Okay, so let’s get into this God game. I think it’s time to get serious about the role God plays in human affairs, and evaluate whether it’s appropriate to let everyone in on the bad news: God doesn’t exist, never did, and the closest thing we’ll ever see to God will emerge from our own collective efforts at making meaning. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I no longer see the real value in being tolerant of other people’s beliefs. Sure, when beliefs are relegated to the realm of pure entertainment, they pose no real danger. So, a kid believes U2 is really a supergroup on par with The Beatles or The Who. That’s *his* problem, and it doesn’t really do a lot of harm to anyone except those of us who still stop by MTV occasionally to see what might be playing.

This is worth a read.

FOCUS ON SPY-CAM LANDLORDS By LEONARD GREENE – New York Post Online Edition: news
FOCUS ON SPY-CAM LANDLORDS By LEONARD GREENE – New York Post Online Edition: news:
y 1, 2006 –
Landlords are resorting to a new weapon in their war with tenants over rent stabilization – hidden cameras trained on an occupant’s door “The whole building is paranoid now,” said Bryan Lurie, who last week found a camera hidden inside an electrical box outside his $360-a-month West Village studio apartment. “My friends told me I should have my apartment swept for bugs.”

——

the growth of surveillance culture is amazing. sure the landlord owns the building, but… does he have a right to look into your abode with a spycam?

another moment
so i went to get some groceries today and they had the flowers out front for sale. i am not one to really pursue the confinement of flowers, but clearly others are. so i thought…. what must the world be like to be a person who really desires to own flowers, to grow them…. is that world experience different than mine, where i prefer to find flowers and witness them as part of the landscape. i realize that for me to take my pleasure, i need others to take their pleasure… that i find reassuring. it is a fact about the world that i take pleasure.

What is Kymaerica
What is Kymaerica:
Kymaerica is a land (and some waters) somewhat co-existent with our
linear world and a general landscape quite similar to large parts of
what we would call North America. There are about 80-90 districts,
containing over 4000 gwomes. A gwome is cognate word meaning “footprint
of (the) nation.” Usually it refers to a nation (so the terms are
often used interchangably), but it is actually a term for a physical
area within a district which has a unified political structure.
Kymaerican influences and stories are everywhere in our linear world
and likely vice versa. But there also many wonders in Kymaerica not
easily found here.

The Seattle Times: Nation & World: Lightning hits cross, kills five children
The Seattle Times: Nation & World: Lightning hits cross, kills five children:
Five Mexican children were killed when a large metal cross they were praying at was struck by lightning in central Mexico, local media reported Monday.
Five children between 9 and 16 years old died and several others suffered burns when lightning struck a white-painted metal cross set on a hill in the town of Santa Maria del Rio early on Sunday, according to two newspaper reports.
Several families had been participating in a midnight ceremony as part of a local religious festival that centers around the cross.
