I wonder if I’m in the minority in feeling strongly about not wanting libraries to collect blogs. They can display my blog if they call my feeds, that’s fine, as long as the parser checks back and updates the content when I update it. And deletes things when I delete them. I have no problem with libraries providing tools for patrons to search through blog content (e.g. access to the internet), and I even like the idea of librarians classify blogs and allowing them to show up as part of a larger pool of search results. But I still want to retain control of that content.
It’s not that I object to things becoming more public and more accessible; I’m under no delusions that my blog being a blog provides me with any level of privacy. I just don’t like the idea of taking a living document and turning it into a dead one, for the sake of the future. I don’t feel like I post to my blog for the sake of the future, and I don’t think the present owes the future its brain waves. The future might want my posts as part of it’s historical record, but I’m under no obligation to provide them.
Just because a thing is text doesn’t make it a book that can be secured between covers and placed safely on a shelf. And I think there’s a difference between providing access and archiving; I’d like to see that distinction made more clear. I realize the internet and people using it takes copies of things all the time, but I’d like to see my profession take a more nuanced approach to this, to deal with documents in the way that the documents themselves exist.
But you’ve already heard me go on at length about this; in person, no less! Thanks for posting this. I filled out their survey. The one piece they didn’t ask is about your profession; I’m sure it would be interesting for them to know that one of the people who so strongly disagrees with their blog archiving project is a librarian.
