Many Americans See Little Point To Web: Survey – Internet Technology News by InformationWeek
Many Americans See Little Point To Web: Survey – Internet Technology News by InformationWeek:
Park Associates, a Dallas-based technology market research firm, said 29 percent of U.S. households, or 31 million homes, do not have Internet access and do not intend to subscribe to an Internet service over the next 12 months.

to me, this is unsurprising. most people are too busy… the have one or two jobs, families, etc. the internet is not seen as valuable in their lives.

Wow. Just wow.
Wow. Just wow.:
Here is a recent classroom moment that totally captures the essence of how hard it is to teach math in my school and I’d venture to suspect that ours is not the only school in NYC like this. I will preface this by saying that it is a class comprised of kids who were incredibly frustrated or incredibly MIA in the algebra class from the first semester, so this is not representative of all of my students.
—–
i have seen people in graduate school who can’t do algebra too… i wonder how they shop and make judgments about money. what must life be like for someone who cannot do basic arithmetic, who has the ability, but never learned.

MIS | Magazine > Adapting to the user:
Singapore Management University may be the new kid on the block, but it could teach organisations a lesson or two when it comes to executing projects that engage users and stick to budgets.
Ultra-prestigious institutions like Harvard or Cambridge may wear their lengthy histories like badges of honor, but the story of Singapore Management University (SMU) shows being a relative upstart has its own advantages.

Csikszentmihalyi starts doctoral programme on happiness
Csikszentmihalyi starts doctoral programme on happiness:
According to the Los Angeles Times, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of the 1990 bestseller “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience” and a pioneer in positive psychology, is leading a new doctoral programme on happiness at Claremont Graduate University (in California).
“The PhD program in the emerging field of positive psychology marks an advance for serious research into human happiness and related quality-of-life concerns. It’s an arena drawing the attention of psychologists, as well as neuroscientists, economists and even political scientists.”

TextArc.org Home:
A TextArc is a visual represention of a text—the entire text (twice!) on a
single page. A funny combination of an index, concordance, and summary;
it uses the viewer’s eye to help uncover meaning.
Here are more detailed overviews of the interactive work
and the prints.

I applied for this.
:
The Summer/Winter Schools should help interested students and academicians as well as individuals working in the private sector or in government, to understand better the global Internet Governance controversy and to get a comprehensive and structured knowledge on the various aspects of Internet Governance. It is organized by a consortium of European Universities and in close cooperation with UNESCO, the Diplo Foundation and the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). It offers a one week course (40 hours) and covers the political, legal, economic, socio-cultural, technological and other dimensions of the governance of the Internet. Each academic lecture will be followed by a Q&A Session. There will be smaller workshops and round tables in the evening for interactive communication with faculty members and leading experts from governments and industry which will be invited for special presentations followed by a daily “Snacks & Wine” for informal interpersonal discussion. The Summer School is followed by an international academic symposium, August 4 – 5, 2007

It should be interesting… maybe I’ll be able to use my Fellowship money for it, I could use another fellowship at this rate.
