Hokie Hope -Orange and Maroon Effect Friday April 20th
Hokie Hope – Orange and Maroon Effect Friday April 20th
I know this email is quickly circulating around through the Hokie community,
so I apologize if some of you have already received this, but I wanted to
pass it on to both my VT and non-VT friends…please participate if you wish
and pass along to others as well.
*Virginia Tech family members across the country have united to declare this
Friday, April 20th, an “Orange and Maroon Effect” day to honor those killed
in the tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support for Virginia Tech
students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. “Orange and
Maroon Effect” was born several years ago as an invitation to Tech fans to
wear orange and maroon to Virginia Tech athletic events. We invite everyone
from all over the country to be a part of the Virginia Tech family this
Friday, to wear orange and maroon to support the families of those who were
lost, and to support the school and community we all love so much.*

Manhattan Candle Light Vigil
All:
Again, thanks to each of you who have reached out with thoughts,
prayers, and suggestions.
Let me also apologize for not responding to each of your individual
inquiries/questions – as you can imagine, the response has been
overwhelming.
As Hokie Nation, and the nation as a whole, grieves over the tragedy
at Virginia Tech, Manhattan Hokies has planned a candle light vigil to
be held at Washington Square Park on Thursday April 19th at 7:30pm.
There will be a moment of silence to honor the victims, families and
friends of those affected.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone else who might be interested.
Respectfully,
Steve Hole
President
Manhattan Hokies

Oh my goodness…. This is a horrible… I have so many friends there and they have friends, this affects us all.
I think the ethos of violence that underwrites these sorts of horrors has to end. That someone, even unhinged, thinks that mass murder is a possible act is a generally unacceptable level of violence to be evidenced in society.

Dangerous Intersection » Blog Archive » Gentle “Miranda Warning” cards for religious moderates:
–Gentle Reminder to a Theist Acquaintance–
You have publicly made a religious claim that is vague or has no trustworthy basis in fact. If I had remained silent, you might have erroneously assumed that I agreed with you. Because I value our relationship, though, I am hereby taking this moment to advise you of my disagreement. I am handing you this card to remind you of my beliefs:
* There are no invisible sentient beings such as Gods, spirits and ghosts.
* When people die, they are completely dead. They don’t “go” anywhere.
* The ancient religious scripture on which you rely is untrustworthy because it is vague, self-contradictory and historically unsupported.
* To best understand life one should employ a naturalistic worldview free of supernatural elements.
* There are many important things about life that humans simply don’t know and it is important to acknowledge our ignorance.
* I judge morality entirely on whether people demonstrate kindness to one another, not on religious beliefs.

Just a light little guide for those who are less interested in concern for others than they might be.

Back to the playground – The Boston Globe:
American children, overprotected and overprogrammed, have ever less time and space for play. But an eclectic collection of advocates is fighting back, designing bold new playgrounds that are manifestoes on the importance of fun.
