the answer: well if you were here, you would just change the ph.d. to require participation in some number of workshops per year for students in residence, that is easy enough, since departments or collections of departments control what is necessary for satisfactory progress.

there is never too much theory and not enough practice, theory is a practice. if you want something built, then build it, but to claim that others should build things and stop thinking about building things is a form of fascism identified by bataille and likely others. it is anti-intellectualism too. so lets be careful out there and let people do what they want like a free open community of developers should.

The GrayLIT Network is a portal for technical report information generated through federally funded research and development projects. Developed by the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), in collaboration with DOD/DTIC, NASA, and EPA, the unique cross-searching capability called Distributed Explorer has been applied to some of OSTI's other major Web sites, including the EnergyFiles Virtual Library, the E-print Network and Federal R&D Project Summaries . Each of these sites applies the Distributed Explorer tool in a slightly different manner based on the unique attributes of site content. Since the GrayLIT Network search utilizes the capability of each individual site search, results may vary. For example, in the case of the DOE Information Bridge, the full text of each technical report is searched and the results are returned accordingly. In some of the other full-text databases only the bibliographic information is searched at the site. In these cases, the full text is accessible and may be downloaded. as a big proponent of the study and analysis of grey literature, i think this is great. grey literature is some of the most interesting and strange science and technology literature around and it is very revealing as to the interests of small populations and their interests.

If Bush remains in office, we will have a draft. There is no way tey can maintain the military readiness they claim to need without one. Almost 50% of the soldiers in Iraq will not re-enlist. The Guard and Resreves are pretty wel down. ONly by bringing back the draft will they be able to keep it going. The numbers and the legislation are all there. The American people are not prepared for it but I am sure that this Adminstration will coordinate events to make it seem necessary.If they are elected this time. yep, there likely will be a draft, at least of certain experts. really there has to be because no one will volunteer to serve under this president, at least no one that I know and respect, he's a walking death sentence of sorts and with that a bane to the concept of a volunteer army.
