The Flip Side of IT. After asking their chief information officer to resign, administrators at Louisiana State University are looking for a computing manager — and a strategy for affording new technology. (Greater Baton Rouge Business Report) [Chronicle.com - The Wired Campus]

someone was telling me a long time ago that lsu was a sun/solaris house and that their technical gurus generally did not mesh well with faculty. the clash of the elites happens on occasion.

Draft EU constitution supports free circulation of scientific knowledge. Here's the draft text of Article III-146(1), released June 16, 2004:

The Union's action shall aim to strengthen its scientific and technological bases, by achieving a European research area in which researchers, scientific knowledge and technology circulate freely, and encourage it to become more competitive, including in its industry, while promoting all the research activities deemed necessary by virtue of other Chapters of the Constitution.

(Thanks to Research Research.) (PS: This is very likely “free as in speech” rather than “free as in beer”. But so far, so good.) [Open Access News]

yes, you can see this is something he would do. and something that bush would support. i mean the texas republican party is actually more or less arguing for the overthrow of the federal government and they are allowed to persist, it is the same with many rightist religious groups…. no word from ashcroft, but ecology and animal rights activists… they are labeled terrorists by this regime.

Happy Solstice!. Why does the midsummer solstice always creep up on me every year? You'd think I'd have got used to it by now, but no, every 21st June I think 'Oh my! That came around quick!' And every year I think 'Oh, so now we start the long descent into winter. Damn. I'd only just got used to it being summer.'

Course, it would help if summer was actually summery, but this is England and that may be just too much to ask. [Chocolate and Vodka]

Distraction.

I spent an hour or so playing with fish yesterday afternoon. Other OS X users who don’t mind a certain degree of instability (especially with full-screen mode) might lose some time with it, too.
